Heisman Trophy Watch: Top Five-ish after Week 11

The Heisman race became a little more defined this week after Boise State and Stanford lost to TCU and Oregon respectively.

Andrew Luck is a media darling, one can count on him being in New York regardless of his play the rest of the season. HogManInLA reporters are investigating if he was mailed an invitation before the season began. In the biggest game of Luck’s season he finished 27-41 for 271 yards passing with 3 touchdowns and two interceptions. Not very Heisman – MVP type numbers against top competition in front of a national TV audience.

Kellen Moore had a good game against TCU. He had a chance to win the game for BSU put left it up to his field goal kicker. My Heisman winner wants the ball and wants to make the plays to win the game.

Moore finished the game 28 or 38 for 320 yards passing with 2 touchdowns and zero interceptions.

Brandon Weeden continues to get it done week after week. With no Big 12 Conference Title Game to play and the Heisman Trophy being announced before the major bowls are played, Weeden’s opportunity to “win” the Heisman will come against Oklahoma on Thanksgiving Day weekend.

Here’s how my top Heisman players performed:

Brandon Weeden vs. Texas Tech
31-37 for 423 yards passing, 5 touchdowns, 0 interceptions, 1 sack, 224.4 QB rating

Justin Blackmon vs. Texas Tech
6 catches for 103 receiving yards, 2 touchdowns

Case Keenum vs. Tulane
22-29, 325 yards passing, 3 touchdowns, 0 interceptions, sacked twice, 204.1 QB rating
5 rushing attempts for 8 yards, 0 touchdowns

Trent Richardson vs. Mississippi State
32 rushing attempts for 127 yards, 1 touchdown, 0 fumbles
2 receptions, 26 yards receiving, 0 touchdowns

Collin Klein vs. Texas A&M
17-27 for 281 yards passing, 1 touchdown, 1 interception, sacked 4 times
35 rushing attempts, 103 rushing yards, 5 touchdowns

Robert Griffin vs. Kansas
22-29 for 312 yards passing, 3 touchdowns, 1 interception, 0 sacks
10 rushing attempts, 103 yards rushing, 1 touchdown

  1. Can you clarify why LeMichael James isn't on your list? Surely it's not because he didn't just torch Stanford.

  2. Michael, James is a heck of a running back but there are a few things that make him unworthy of a Heisman.

    1) He missed two games due to injuries. I would be more understanding if several of the top candidates have missed time due to injury but he is the only one who has.

    2) He only had 54 yards rushing against LSU. The PAC-12 is not known for their tough defenses, pass or rushing. Racking up big numbers in the PAC-12 is not impressive.

    3) When his big rushing games have come against Missouri State, Arizona, and Cal.

    4) He should have been taken out of the game against Cal before his injury. Keeping him in the game to rack up Heisman numbers against a poor defense is bush league. The word karma keeps popping into my head.

    5) His lone impressive game this season has come against Stanford... if one thinks Stanford is worthy of their ranking. Oregon is the first tough game of Stanford's season sans USC. Torching an overrated Stanford team is what it is... a long line of compiling stats against inferior competition.

Thanks for reading and sharing your comments. I appreciate your time.
