College Football: Razorback’s OC, Garrick McGee, Named UAB Head Coach

Garrick McGee, University of Arkansas’ offensive coordinator, has been named the new head coach at University of Alabama Birmingham.

McGee, from the Tulsa, Oklahoma area and a former college quarterback for the University of Oklahoma, was linked to the University of Tulsa job after the 2010 season but returned for his second season as offensive coordinator for Arkansas head coach Bobby Petrino.

McGee was largely featured on ESPN’s “Year of the Quarterback: Depth Chart Arkansas” explaining the daily routines of Arkansas’ offense and how he coaches the Arkansas quarterbacks.

Speculation as to why McGee would take the UAB job instead of possibly waiting for a bigger FBS program to offer him runs the spectrum. The most glaring obstacle in any Bobby Petrino offensive coordinator’s way is Bobby Petrino calls the plays for the Hogs.

Neil Callaway, the departed UAB head coach, was fired after guiding the Blazers to a 3-9 2011 record. Callaway was 21-51 over during his five season stint as head coach for the Blazers.

Callaway had been an offensive coordinator at University of Georgia, University of Alabama, and University of Houston before taking the UAB head coaching position.

Petrino has lost two offensive coordinators over the past three seasons to other programs. Bobby Petrino’s brother, Paul, left the Razorback program before the 2010 season to be the head offensive coordinator at Illinois under head coach Ron Zook. The Illini fired Ron Zook November  27.
