It didn't take long for the Mets staff to poke fun at their "beloved" players this weekend. After their opening day game, Mets staff played a clip from the animated Fox TV show "Family Guy" on their Jumbo Tron ripping the Mets. In the clip Stewie, a toddler on the highly popular show, is attending opening day wearing a Mets' baseball cap. A voice over from the game announcer states, "Opening pitch for the new season... and the season is over". Stewie then throws his baseball cap on the ground in disgust.
If I were a Mets player I would be more than upset. If I were a part owner of the Mets I would be more than pissed. One would hope that the players and fans have a little more hope to be in the playoffs this year than to be disheartened after a rough opening weekend. Especially since the Mets are trying to sell part of their franchise for $200 million!
The Mets do have a tough road this year. Two teams within their division are supposed to battle for division ownership and the National League wild card berth (Phillies and Braves) leaving the Mets out of contention for a playoff spot again. On paper the Mets have had an extremely talented team over the past 4 years with end of the season meltdowns in two consecutive seasons in 2008 and 2009 which cost them playoff berths.
Just to clarify, as sad as it is that the staff played the clip... it's still pretty damn funny.
