College World Series play began Saturday with Vanderbilt taking on North Carolina . Vanderbilt will be the first team to tell you having a strong bullpen can make all the difference in the College World Series. North Carolina roughed up Vanderbilt’s starting pitcher, Sonny Gray (1st round draft pick for the Oakland A’s), for 8 hits, 3 ER, 5 BB in 4.2 innings. Corey Williams came in to shut the door on the Tar Hills with 2.2 innings of shut out relief pitching to earn the win. Will Clinard and Kevin Ziomek combined for 1.2 innings of relief pitching with 0 ER.
Both teams brought their offense to Omaha as the Commodores had 10 hits and the Tar Hills had 11. UNC was led by 3B Collin Moran going 3-4 with 2 RBIs and Vanderbilt by lead-off hitter LF Tony Kemp going 3-4 with 1 RBI and 1 BB.
UF starting pitcher, Hudson Randall, was able to overcome 2 Florida errors and 4 unearned runs to beat the Longhorns. Randall only gave up 1 earned run on 5 hits in 6.2 innings pitched. Florida ’s bullpen was able to 2.1 innings of no-hit shutout relief to close the game.
Vanderbilt will play Florida Monday night at 7:00 p.m. EST.
