Steroids in Hollywood?

Agreeing with Charlie Sheen!

Funny how time will allow certain people to speak the truth about their past steroid use… even Charlie Sheen. In an interview with Sports Illustrated about the iconic baseball classic “Major League”, Sheen went on record that he took steroids for 6 to 8 weeks to help him for the role. Sheen claims that he saw a 6 mph increase in his fastball from 79 to 85.

Charlie went on to say that steroids and his outlandish haircut did not mix well at bars during his shooting schedule for “Major League”. Sheen said, “I didn’t like the haircut because it generated so many comments in bars. I’ve got enough of that already. Add that to the mix and it’s a recipe for a fistfight.” No word if Dorn took PED to help him over his “matador” defense at third. Too bad our sports heroes don’t come clean about their possible PED or steroid use.

Sheen isn’t the first actor to use steroids or performance enhancing drugs for movie roles. Mickey Rourke was asked if he took steroids for the role of Randy ‘The Ram’ Robinson in the movie “The Wrestler”. Rourke was quoted saying, “I did what wrestler’s do”. In six months time Rourke went from 195 to 230 lbs of solid muscle. Rourke was nominated for an Academy Award for his portrayal of an aging professional wrestler; “The Wrestler" was released in 2008.

During a 2007 visit to Australia Sylvester Stallone was caught by customs officers with 48 vials of the human growth hormone, Jintropin. Stallone revived the ultimate ‘80’s action hero role of John Rambo in the movie “Rambo”, released in 2008. I don’t know if there’s a connection to the two events but…

South Carolina Wins Their Second Straight National Championship

South Carolina is the sixth school to win back to back NCAA National Baseball Championships Tuesday night defeating the Florida Gators 5-2. South Carolina won their 16th straight game breaking the previous CWS record set by the University of Texas in 1983 and 1984.

South Carolina’s head coach, Ray Turner, turned to Michael Roth (14-3) again to bring home a national championship. Roth started last years championship clinching game for South Carolina and started Tuesday night’s game going 7.2 innings giving up 5 hits and 2 ER for the win. Matt Price threw 1.1 innings for another CWS save; his 20th on the season.

Karsten Whitson threw 4.2 innings for the Gators but gave up 3 runs, 1 ER, on 4 hits to take the loss. Florida brought everything they had to they mound, having 6 different pitchers make an appearance but they were not able to stop the Gamecocks offensive attack yielding 10 total hits, 5 runs, 3 ER.

The Gamecocks had 7 different batters register a hit and three of those batters with two hits each; 1B Christian Walker 2-4, DH Brady Thomas, SS Peter Mooney 2-3. Monday night’s hero for the Gamecock’s, 2B Scott Wingo, went 1-3 with 2 RBIs to pace the Gamecock attack. Catcher Mike Zunino tried to keep Florida in the game going 3-3 with a solo home run in the 4th.

South Carolina jumped on Whitson in the 3rd inning getting a sacrifice fly from Scott Wingo to score SS Peter Mooney. Christian Walker then reached on a fielding error by SS Nolan Fontana scoring Evan Marzilli, and Brady Thomas hit an infield single to 2B scoring Jackie Bradley Jr. Mooney hit a solo home run in the 6th to add to the Gamecocks lead. Wingo added a RBI single in the 8th for the games final score.

The SEC has won the last three CWS; LSU 2009, South Carolina 2010 and 2011. The PAC-10 was the last conference to accomplish the same feat winning Arizona 1986 and Stanford in 1987 and 1988. Southern California has won the most consecutive CWS winning 5 straight times from 1970-1974.

Football Cops Trailer -- Payton and Eli Manning

Peyton and Eli Manning are at it again.

Direct TV has released their commercial for the 2011-2012 NFL Football Package. The comedic trailer features the Mannings, Papa Archie as well, as ‘70’s looking retro police officers wielding justice in “Football Cops”. The spoof is complete with a handlebar and Tom Selleck like mustache from hard throwing former pro quarterbacks CJ Hunter (Eli) and Mike Tahoe (Peyton). Archie makes a cameo as the police commissioner trying to control his wild card cops.

The possible Ray Lewis inspired trailer is a must see. The football puns are great; the plot of the trailer is lost but that’s not the spirit of the spot. Peyton continues to show his media savvy and knack for finding the comedy in all of his commercials.

Let’s hope all their efforts are for not and there is a pro football season.

They even have a back story for the street tough heroes. You can read more at http://www.directv.com/footballcops/default.html

College World Series Championship Round Updates

The South Carolina Gamecocks have found an exciting but dangerous blueprint for winning in the College World Series. With a flair for the dramatic the Gamecocks went extra innings on Monday night to defeat the Florida Gators 2-1 to win game 1 of the College World Series.

Just like in the Gamecocks’ CWS Championship berth clinching game versus the Virginia Cavaliers, the Gamecocks took advantage of two throwing errors to score the winning run. With one out in the top of the 11th inning 1B Christian Walker hit a single up the middle to start the inning. Walker, cleared to play with a broken wrist just before game time, attempted to steal second base when Gators’ catcher Mike Zunino, a Johnny Bench Award finalist, overthrew second allowing Walker to advance to third. Gators’ CF Bryson Smith then overthrew third trying to get Walker out at third allowing the winning run to score. Walker and his broken wrist went 2-5 for the Gamecocks.

Florida had their chances to score in the 9th and 10th inning. Two Gator runners were thrown out at home in the 9th and one in the 10th. In the 9th inning 2B Scott Wingo, an 11th round draft pick by the Dodgers, threw home twice to get Gator runners Zunino and DH Brian Johnson out. 3B Cody Dent was thrown out by LF Jake Williams in the 10th.

Offensively the Gators had great nights from Johnson 3-5 and Smith 2-4 with a walk but only managed 8 hits in total. The Gamecocks faired no better at the plate only getting 7 hits, with 2 hits coming from Walker.

The Gamecocks threw four pitchers Monday night with starter Forrest Koumas going 5.2 innings giving up 3 hits and 1 ER. Matt Price was a hero again for the Gamecocks earning the save closing out the 11th inning. John Taylor, a Seattle Mariners’ draft pick, pitched the 9th and 10th innings for South Carolina to earn the win. Taylor walked 3 and gave up 3 hits while shutting down the Gators.

The Gators countered the Gamecocks with Hudson Randall who threw 7.2 innings of 3 hit ball giving up 1 ER. Nick Maronde, a third round draft pick of the Angels, took the loss throwing 1 inning of relief.

Cody Dent put the Gators on the board in the 3rd scoring LF Tyler Thompson, a National’s draft pick, on a scarf ice fly. The Gamecocks scored in the 8th to tie the game on 2B Scott Wingo’s single up the middle scoring SS Peter Mooney.

Game 2 is Tuesday night at 8:00 p.m. EST. The College World Series Championship Round is a best of 3 series.

Major League Baseball All-Star Voting – American League

Think there’s not a “steroid-era” hangover for Major League Baseball fans? Take one look at the American League top vote getters and guess again. Toronto Blue Jays Outfielder Jose Bautista, 23 home runs and New York Yankees Curtis Granderson, 21 homeruns, lead all American League players with 4,156,940 and 3,473,227 respectively. 2008 Home Run Derby star Josh Hamilton is third with 2,400,408 votes for outfielders.

The other obvious voter trend is fan voting for the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox. Of the seven positions (fans vote for three outfielders regardless of their natural positions; centerfielder, left fielder, and right fielder) American League positions fans can vote for, six of the seven positions top vote getters are from one of the two teams. Jose Bautista is the only non Yankee or Red Sox player leading a position in fan balloting.

2011 Major League Baseball All-Star Voting – National League

The races are heating up on the National League side of the All-Star voting. The NL does not support the same East Coast bias as the American League making the NL race wide open. With only four days left for fans to vote online, only three positions of the possible six positions to vote for are a lock. National League voters do not have to vote for a Designated Hitter and all outfielders, regardless of natural position, are lumped together.

The positions that appear to be a lock to start the 2011 MLB All-Star Game are Atlanta Braves’ catcher Brian McCann (3,062,884), Philadelphia Phillies’ third baseman Placido Polanco (3,261,718), and the NL’s top vote getter Milwaukee Brewers’ outfielder Ryan Braun (3,932,100). St. Louis Cardinals’ first baseman Albert Pujols recent injury has cost him votes amongst fans. Pujols is only 400,000 votes ahead of Milwaukee Brewers’ first baseman Prince Fielder with Cincinnati Reds’ Joey Votto close behind.

The Sporting News second best player in baseball (still a puzzling pick), Colorado Rockies’ shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, who made his first and only other All-Star appearance in 2010 is batting .276 with 14 HR, and 50 RBIs is in danger of losing his chance to start the 2011 All-Star game to Jose Reyes of the New York Mets. Since Mets owner Fred Wilpon publicly ripped Reyes, he has been on a tear. Reyes was hitting .309 on May 1st with 2 triples and 8 stolen bases. Since then Reyes has raised his batting average to .341 with 14 triples and 28 total stolen bases.

Atlanta Braves’ third baseman Chipper Jones is not drawing many sentimental votes in his last possible season in the “bigs”. Jones, a future Hall of Fame inductee, is currently second in voting for third baseman with 2,040,594.

Outfielder Matt Kemp has been a steady force for the lowly Los Angeles Dodgers this season. He is currently only 200,000 votes shy of Cardinals’ outfielder Matt Holiday for the third and final NL outfield position. Needing votes, the Dodgers’ front office has been actively enticing fans to vote for Kemp. Offers include an opportunity to meet Matt Kemp, discounted tickets, and free tickets for an upcoming 2011 game. All a fan needs to do is vote 20 times for Kemp through the Dodgers’ website.

Sports Quick Hits

The week that was… sort of.

The Florida Marlins hired the first player signed by the Cincinnati Red Stockings in 1869 to coach their team for the rest of the year. How naps will Jack McKeon take during the game? I see him handing over the starting lineups, sticking around until top of the third, then a nap. Then come back to see what’s going on in the seventh; if they’re losing… nap. If they are winning maybe he will stick around to see the end of the game.

Rory McIlroy ditches the PGA and European Tour and goes NHL?

Fill it full of Guniess and see what happens.

Ross Perot is still alive and his son is just as crazy

Dallas Mavericks minority owner (5%) Ross Perot Jr. with Hillwood Investment Properties is suing Dallas Mavericks majority owner Mark Cuban for being “careless and reckless” with the Dallas Mavericks. In a poorly thought out strategy to have Mark Cuban ousted as majority owner, Perot Jr. claims Cuban has caused Hillwood to “lose substantial investment value”.

Did anyone tell Junior that the Dallas Mavericks just won the NBA Championship? I have an idea. Let’s let Perot Jr. swap minority ownership with a Los Angeles Clippers minority owner. Donald Sterling seems like Junior’s kind of majority owner.

Historical note: In 1982 Junior wanted to be the first person to fly a helicopter around the world. Congratulations. It took 29 days and change to fly a helicopter around the world. Does that get one a free beer and their local pub? If that got him laid I would really be surprised.

Auburn got their 2010-2011 BCS Championship rings.

Wonder how long before a War Eagle gets 100k for that bling and claim he didn’t know he couldn’t sell it. The “it’s mine I earned it so I can sell it” defense is getting really old. These are college educated kids right?

Sports Quick Hits -- Thoughts on Ron Artest's Name Change

The Minnesota Timberwolves front office is just horrible. No other way to put it. They’ve kept head coach Kurt Rambis around for the 2011 NBA draft but reports are he is a “dead man walking”. Why keep a coach you’re about to can around to help draft players for a coach that could have… who knows what type of offensive or defensive scheme?!?!

The T-Wolves drafted tweener forward Derrick Williams out of University of Arizona. Williams is widely considered the best NBA ready player in the draft; one of only a handful NBA ready players in the 2011 draft. The problem is Minnesota already has Kevin Love, Michael Beasley, and now Williams. As if they were not overloaded at the forward position, in the second round the T-Wolves drafted 6’6” forward Tanguy Ngombo from the Qatar League. The T-Wolves thought Tanguy was 21 years old but it turns out he is 26 years old. Not the player they thought they were getting.

Good job scouting department. You have all year to scout teams and players, find out ages, size, and every other thing you may need to know about a prospect. But somehow what you couldn’t find out in 12 months, the rest of the world could find out in a matter of minutes. This easily avoidable mistake is just another black eye for a team and city that doesn’t seemingly deserve the bad press.

Ron Artest… need I say more?

Ron Artest has gone Chad Johnson on us. You do remember who Chad Johnson is? He was a second round pick in the NFL draft out of Oregon State. He’s the wide receiver that wore a yellow Hall of Fame jacket on the sidelines during a game. Maybe the name change thing works? Chad Ochocinco did it now Ron Artest wants to do it.

Ron-Ron wants to change his name to Metta World Peace. The thought is nice. Change your name to something that could inspire others. BUT in typical Ron Artest fashion he’s managed to mess up a good thing. Metta is Buddhist for friendliness. So the name change reads, “Friendliness World Peace”… as opposed to violent world peace???

Quick thoughts on the name change and things you will hear in the upcoming years if Ron-Ron’s pending name change status is approved.

During a game: “Peace out, Fish in”.

Metta gave him a piece of his mind.

World Peace saves LA.

World Peace or World B. Free?

World Peace steps it up on defense.

U.S Reed or World Peace?

World Peace runs over the 7’ German.

France’s favorite son and World Peace are having it out tonight.

World Peace has not been Metta tonight.

Metta is the manna???

The charity stripe has not been Metta to World Peace tonight.

LA has traded World Peace for a player to be named later.

No more World Peace for LA.

World Peace wins humanitarian of the year award and then clothes lines a player during a playoff game… wait that did happen.

College World Series Updates

Finally the game college baseball fans had been waiting to see. The defending College World Series Champions South Carolina Gamecocks versus the 2011 top seeded Virginia Cavaliers. Sure both teams played each other on Tuesday but that game was a runaway by the Gamecocks 7-1, not what fans had been hoping to see. College baseball fans got their fill and then some in an extra inning pitchers duel that sent the Gamecocks to the CWS Championship round for the second straight year as they defeated UV 3-2 in 13 innings. Looking back, both teams will see multiple chances missed and wasted opportunities but neither team gave up.

Virginia jumped out in the second inning on a RBI fielder’s choice hit by CF Kenny Swab to score 3B Steven Proscia. The Gamecocks would answer in the bottom of the fourth inning with a two run double by DH Brady Thomas scoring 1B Christian Walker and CF Jackie Bradley Jr.

In the eighth inning Virginia benefited from 2 South Carolina errors, 3B Adrian Morales allowed Virginia SS Chris Taylor to reach base on a throwing error and SS Peter Mooney committed a fielding error off a John Hicks hit pitch to score the game tying run.

Gamecocks junior LHP Michael Roth, a 2011 Cleveland Indians draft pick, pitched 7 strong innings giving up 1 ER on 4-hits and striking out 3. John Taylor gave up one unearned run in .1 innings of work for South Carolina. The Cavaliers got 3 innings of 1-hit ball from Danny Hultzen, the second pick of the 2011 MLB draft by the Seattle Mariners, before being relieved by Kyle Crockett. Crockett gave up 2 ER in 4 innings of work.

Both teams turned to their closers earlier than they had hoped and relied on them for a starter’s type outing in innings worked and pitches thrown. Matt Price threw for 5.2 innings giving up 0 runs on 95 pitches for the Gamecocks while Branden Kline threw 5 innings of shutout ball throwing 107 pitches for the Cavaliers. South Carolina gambled heavily on Matt Price in the 13th inning which almost cost them the game. Price loaded the bases with no outs then struck out SS Taylor and LF John Barr lined into a double play to get out of the jam.

Cody Winiarski came in to relieve Kline in the bottom of the 13th inning. Winiarski gave up a leadoff single to DH Brady Thomas (2-6) then the wheels came off for Winiarski. On back to back plays he committed throwing errors, the last allowing pitch runner Adam Matthews to score the winning run on C Robert Beary’s sacrifice bunt. Winiarski faced three batters but did not retire any Gamecock hitters.

South Carolina (53-14) will face the Florida Gators (53-17) in the Championship Round of the College World Series Monday night at 8:00 p.m. EST.

CWS Facts

This will be the first all-SEC Championship Game since the 1997 CWS between LSU and Alabama.

Only the PAC 10, 1998 Southern California vs. Arizona State, has had an all conference championship game since 1997.

South Carolina beat the Florida Gators 2 out of 3 times in conference play. They did not play each other during the SEC Tournament.

This is Florida’s second appearance in the NCAA Championship Game.

Florida’s last appearance in the Championship game was in 2005 vs. University of Texas which they lost 4-2 and 6-2.

This is also South Carolina’s second appearance in the Championship Game. South Carolina won the 2010 NCAA College World Series.

College World Series Updates

The Florida Gators continued the dominance over the Vanderbilt Commodores to earn a berth in the College World Series Friday night in Omaha, Nebraska, winning 6-4. Both teams played hard in a wild offensive game.

Tampa Bay 1st round draft pick Sonny Gray was roughed up for the second time in the CWS by the Florida Gators for 6 earned runs in 7 innings of work. The Gators collected hits from every starting position player tallying 13 total hits. 4 Gator players had multiple hits; Leadoff hitter SS Nolan Fontana went 2-3 with 2 RBIs, 2B Josh Adams 2-3 with a run scored, RF Daniel Pigott went 2-4 with 2 runs, and 3B Cody Dent 2-2 with 2 runs. The bottom of the Gators order was getting on base and the top of the order was driving them in all night.

Commodores 1B Aaron Westlake jumped on Junior LHP Alex Panteliodis, a 9th round pick by the New York Mets, for a solo homerun in the 1st inning. Panteliodis would settle down as he threw 6 strong innings allowing 1 ER and 3 hits for the Gators.

Vanderbilt mounted a comeback in the 7th inning off Tommy Toledo, 2 ER on 3-hits in .2 innings pitched. At the end of 7 the score was 4-3 Florida. In the top of the 8th Vanderbilt tied the game at 4 all. Vandy DH Conrad Connor was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score the last run of the game for the Commodores.

In the bottom of the 8th inning Grayson started the inning but Will Clinard came in for relief with the bases loaded. Clinard gave up a Preston Tucker singled, which would prove to be the game winning run, scoring Daniel Pigott. Clinard then threw a wild pitch allowing Cody Dent to score.

Austin Maddox closed out the game for the Gators throwing 1.2 innings of shutout ball to earn the victory.

The Gators (53-17) await the winner of the South Carolina vs. Virginia Cavaliers game in the CWS Championship round. The Championship round begins Monday night at 8:00 p.m. EST.

College World Series Updates, Day 6

California Bears vs. Virginia Cavaliers

Cal’s miracle season came to an end Thursday against the #1 seeded Virginia Cavaliers losing 8-1. Cal’s whole season can be looked at as a blessing thanks to generous donations from benefactors of their baseball program but their improbable run as possible NCAA Champions is over. Virginia senior RHP Tyler Wilson dominated the Bears earning his second 2011 CWS victory.

Wilson, a 10th round pick of the Baltimore Orioles, worked 7.2 innings, striking out 5, walking none, spreading out 5-hits, and giving up 1 ER. Wilson retired 11 straight batters from the second inning into the sixth inning. He kept the Bears hitters off-balance throughout the game. Bears DH Tony Renda went 1-4 and drove in CF Darrell Matthews for the only Bear run. Leadoff hitter LF/2B Austin Booker went 2-4 in the losing effort.

The Bears pitching staff was undone by three fielding errors which led to three unearned runs for the Cavs. Dixon Anderson took the loss for the Bears pitching 3 innings giving up 1 ER and 1 unearned. Kevin Miller gave up 4 ER in 2.2 innings.

Every Cavs starter registered a hit while 7 different players scored against the Bears. Cavs’ LF John Barr drove in 2 runs, CF Kenny Swab went 2-5, and 2B Keith Werman went 2-2.

The Cavaliers play South Carolina in an elimination game Friday night.

College World Series Updates, Day 5

Vanderbilt Commodores vs. North Carolina Tar Hills

Wasted opportunities and taking advantage of opportunities was the story of the game when Vanderbilt kept their College World Series hopes alive by beating the UNC Tar Hills 5-1 Wednesday night.

RHP Greg Holt, an 8th round draft pick by the Washington Nationals, was rocked by the Commodores for 5 earned runs in 2.2 innings of pitching. The Commodores jumped on Holt from the beginning. Lead off hitter LF Tony Kemp hit a triple to center then scored on a sacrifice fly by SS Anthony Gonzalez. Vandy kept the heat on in the second inning with a lead off hit, a walk, and a 3-run homer by CF Connor Harrell; Harrell went 2-3 with 3 RBIs and a run scored. DH Gregor went 2-2 raising his season batting average to .353 for Vanderbilt. In the third inning C Curt Casali hit a solo home run ending Holtz’s night.

UNC’s bullpen would come in and shutdown Vanderbilt’s run production over the remaining 5.1 innings but the damage was done. Vanderbilt pitcher Taylor Hill threw 7 strong innings giving up 1 ER, 4 hits, and struck out 4 earning the win. Hill did walk 4 Tar Hill players but the Tar Hills could never come through with the clutch hits they needed. In the 5th inning UNC had the bases loaded with one out but could only manage one run on a ball hit to first to score the run. C Jacob Stallings ended his season going 2-4 for the Tar Hills.

Vanderbilt’s win assures the SEC of one team in the NCAA Championship game and at the minimum a second place finish for the 2011 NCAA Baseball season. South Carolina could make the NCAA Championship game an all SEC showdown.

Vanderbilt (54-11) will play the Florida Gators (52-17) Friday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. EST.

Thursday’s Game

In an elimination game, the University of Virginia (55-11) will play the California Bears (38-22) at 7:00 p.m. EST.

South Carolina will play the winner of the UV vs. Cal game Friday night at 7:00 p.m. EST.

The Championship Series is set to begin Monday night at 8:00 p.m. EST. The Championship round is a best of 3 series.

If You Fail Once, Maybe You Shouldn't Try Again

Over the years we’ve seen what can happen to our favorite celebrities and athletes when they have too many “yes men” or “yes women” in their camp. Bethanie Mattek-Sands is a victim again of the wrong yes people in her corner.

She wore a yellow tennis ball studded dress to a pre-Wimbledon party last week. Her dress was designed by Lady Gaga’s designer, Alex Noble. Well Bethanie is at it again. This time she showed up for her tennis match wearing a “Wimbledon White” outfit with a white tennis ball studded jacket. The jacket seems to be inspired by a kid’s video game… think of a kind but hurtful blowfish swimming around your child’s video game waters. The jacket is complete with white tennis balls, tassels, and spikes. Not really a “tennis” themed outfit.

The good thing for Bethanie is she can auction off her jacket to a female Raiders’ fan from a southern state when football season rolls around this fall. I’m waiting for Bethanie’s tennis racket inspired outfits. She’ll have to wear that one at the U.S. Open. I doubt any other Grand Slam event would even consider letting her leave the dressing room wearing that inspired outfit.

I’m saving the line judges and ball boy jokes for the next outfit.

Updates for Day Four of the College World Series

Bracket Two Scores and Highlights from Tuesday

South Carolina Gamecocks vs. Virginia Cavaliers

South Carolina brought the bats and the pitching to this much anticipated CWS showdown. The defending NCAA Champions were able to stay in the winner’s bracket by beating the 2011 #1 seeded University of Virginia 7-1 Tuesday night.

South Carolina shredded UV’s pitching collecting 13 hits, 5 for extra bases, and benefited from 3 Cavaliers’ errors; two by 3B Steven Proscia, a 7th round draft pick of the Seattle Mariners. Four USC players had multiple hits, 1B Christian Walker 2-5 with 2 RBIs, CF Jackie Bradley Jr. 2-5 with 1 RBI, 3B Adrian Morales 3-5 2 runs and 1 RBI, and DH Brady Thomas 3-4 with 1 RBI.

Will Roberts pitched 3.1 innings for UV giving up 3 ER, 6 unearned, on 8 hits taking the loss for the Cavs. Virginia threw 5 other pitchers to slow the Gamecocks offensive onslaught combining for 5 hits, 1 ER, over 5.2 innings of work.

Colby Holmes started for the Gamecocks throwing 4.1 innings of 1-hit, 1 run ball while striking out 7. Holmes gave up a solo home run to Cavs’ C John Hicks in the 4th inning. John Taylor came in to relieve Holmes and threw 4.1 innings of shutout ball, only allowing one hit. Matt Price threw to one batter, getting CF Kenny Swab to fly out to center in the 9th to end the game.

Cavs’ lead off hitter SS Chris Taylor went 2-4 in a losing effort. UV went three and out 5 times Tuesday night.

University of California Bears vs. Texas A&M Aggies

The amazing Bears continued their unlikely march in the CWS and added to the Big 12 disappointing CWS. The Bears eliminated the Aggies 7-3 Tuesday night behind solid pitching and timely hitting.

Offense Highlights

The Bears were outhit by the Aggies 9 to 10 but A&M committed two errors that led to 3 unearned Bear runs which proved to be too much to overcome. Tony Renda led the Bears attack going 2-3 with a run and RBI and 2B Derek Campbell contributed a 2-4 effort with a run and 2 RBIs for the Cal Bears.

The Aggies had great plate performances from CF Krey Bratsen (2-5), C Kevin Gonzalez (3-4), and LF Brandon Wood (2-4). A solo home run by 3B Adam Smith (1-4), a New York Yankees draft pick, in the 4th inning put the Aggies up 1-0 but in the top of the 5th the Bears would show the fighting spirit they’ve had all season long by putting up 3 runs to take the lead.

Pitching Highlights

Michael Wacha threw 108 pitches and faced 32 Bears’ batters. He gave up 9 hits, 7 unearned runs and 4 ER, while walking 2 and striking out 5. Kyle Porter went 6 innings for the Bears giving up 3 ER on 7 hits while striking out 4 for the win. Matt Flemer threw 3 shutout innings in relief for the Bears to earn the save.

Virginia and California will meet Thursday in another elimination game for the Bears. South Carolina will play the winner of the Cal vs. Cavs game on Friday. If South Carolina loses Friday’s game, an elimination game will be played on Saturday for the right to play in the NCCAA Championship game against the bracket one winner.

Wednesday’s Game

In a bracket one elimination game, UNC Tar Hills (51-15) face the Vanderbilt Commodores (53-11) for the right to play the Florida Gators for the NCAA Championship game. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. EST.

Sports Quick Hits

How much “quan” is enough? Are the bragging rights of being the top paid athlete in your profession worth taking the Rod Tidwell risk? Already having the worst season in his future Hall of Fame career, although swinging a hot bat in June (.314, 8 home runs, 14 RBIs), Albert Pujols choose to not resign with the St. Louis Cardinals before the season began so he could test the free agent market for more money after the 2011 season.

Pujols fractured his left forearm in a collision with Kansas City Royals player, Wilson Betemit; this may be Betemit’s claim to lasting fame as Pujols’ future is now in serious doubt. Pujols didn’t just fracture his forearm but injured his wrist as well. If a hitter’s wrist is not 100%... King Albert is supposed to be on the DL for 4-6 weeks. For the sake of baseball and for the Cardinals’ faithful I hope Pujols comes back full strength. As for Pujols’ free agency contract… good luck getting that $30 million per year long term contract. Prince Fielder has to be happy for a couple of reasons now.

Riley still has the fire… must be the hair gel.

Pat Riley, the Miami Heat team president, held a press conference on Tuesday to wrap up the Heat’s NBA season. While answering several questions from the media he was asked, “Will you ever coach again”? Riley said, “No, I’m not going to. It doesn’t mean that I don’t have the fire, but we have a great young coach here and I want to support him and hope that he can grow like I did. This is just his third year.”

Erik Spoelstra beware! This sounds like code words for “I will take over as head coach if you have so much as a two game losing streak during the 2011-2012 season”.

Remember Riley canned Stan Van Gundy in the middle of the 2005-2006 season so he could win another title as a head coach. This was after Riley stepped down as Miami’s head coach days before the start of the 2003-2004 season. Alonzo Mourning was gone and the Heat were rebuilding. Riley did not have the heart to coach the youth movement of rookie shooting guard Dwayne Wade, Lamar Odom, and undrafted power forward Udonis Haslem.

Once the Heat had acquired Shaquille O’Neal to compliment the play of Dwayne Wade at the start of the 2005 season, that’s win “the fire” to coach again got hot. Riley kicked his long time assistant, Stan Van Gundy, to the curb so he could move up the all-time NBA Championship list for winning coaches.

Riley loves the attention and spotlight. If the “Big Three” add a couple of pieces to their team and look unstoppable… how long will it take before Riley pulls the double switch on Spoelstra? If the Big Three win 3 or 4 NBA Championships Riley could see himself tied for second with Red Auerbach in a few years…. I wouldn’t put it past him.

Riley is currently tied for third on the all-time NBA Championships won by coaches.

Phil Jackson 11
Red Auerbach 9
Pat Riley 5
John Kundla 5
Greg Popovich 4

Ohio State dropping review of car sales

The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles has issued a report that there was no “wrong doing” in the sales of 24 of 25 cars to OSU players or players families. OSU spokesperson, Jim Lynch, said, “We have seen no evidence that would lead us to believe that Ohio State student athletes violated any policies when purchasing used cars.”

And Somalia pirates are only looking to sunbath on the decks of the cruise ships they encounter, nothing more.

OSU is not going to look into the financing or payments for the cars purchased by the students and/or families. One report that says nothing wrong happened on the sales of those cars and they are going to sweep it under the rug. Hey OSU, way to be an institution of integrity.

College World Series Updates, Day Three

One team was sent packing and another team has to wait until tomorrow to find out their fate in day three action of the College World Series.

Texas Longhorns vs. North Carolina Tar Hills

The early game in Omaha on Monday saw the Texas Longhorns, 6 time NCAA Baseball Champions, say goodbye to their hopes of capturing their 7th NCAA Baseball Championship by losing to North Carolina 3-0. The Longhorns were shut down by Tar Hill pitcher Kent Emmanuel’s complete game 4-hit shutout. LF Jonathan Walsh tried to spark a punch less Texas’ offense by going 2-3. The Longhorns committed bases running errors to stop scoring opportunities in the second and fourth innings. Tar Hill LF Chaz Frank and RF Seth Baldwin helped double off two Longhorn runners with outfield assists on the plays to end both innings.

The Tar Hills offense scored two runs in the third inning off a two out single by C Jacob Stallings (the son of Vanderbilt’s men’s head basketball coach) to take control of the game. North Carolina collected nine total hits with four of those hits coming from 2-hole hitter CF Ben Bunting. Bunting scored a run and drove in a run.

The story of the game was Kent Emmanuel’s pitching for the Tar Hills. Emmanuel threw 126 pitches, stuck out 5, and walked 1 to earn the victory. Longhorn pitcher Cole Green threw 2 innings giving up 5 hits and 2 earned runs for the loss.

Florida Gators vs. Vanderbilt Commodores

The final outcome of the winner’s bracket game will have to wait until Tuesday as play was suspended due to inclement weather. Florida was leading 3-0 in the bottom half of the sixth inning with two outs when tornado sirens cleared the field; Vanderbilt was batting with two outs. Play will resume on Tuesday at 11:06 a.m. EST.

Colorado Rockies 16th round draft pick RF Preston Tucker hit a three-run home run in the third inning to put the Gators up before play was stopped. Preston was leading a Florida attack that had accumulated 5 hits in 6 innings with Preston going 2-3. Vanderbilt SS Anthony Gomez had 2 of the 4 Commodore hits.

Tampa Rays compensatory pick (#59), LHP Grayson Garvin, gave up five hits and three earned runs for the Commodores on 99 pitches while striking out 9.

North Carolina awaits the loser of the Florida vs. Vanderbilt game. That game will be played Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. EST.

Tuesday’s Games

California Bears (37-22) vs. Texas A&M (47-21) at 2:00 p.m. EST.

South Carolina Gamecocks (51-14) vs. Virginia Cavaliers (55-10) at 7:00 p.m. EST.

College World Series Updates, Day 2

Day Two, Bracket Two Updates

Day two of the College World Series proved to be as exciting as day one. Walk-off hits and strong pitching highlighted play on Sunday.

South Carolina vs. Texas A&M

The Gamecocks and Aggies had to shake off CWS nerves and jitters in the first inning before settling down to fundamental baseball in the second inning. Both teams benefited from an early error in the bottom half and top half of the first inning to tie the game at 4-4. The Gamecocks would earn a walk-off 5-4 victory with a single in the 9th.

South Carolina Pitching
Michael Roth pitched 7.1 innings of 0 earned run ball but gave up 4 unearned runs in the first inning for the Gamecocks. Roth was a workhorse throwing 122 pitches, striking out 8, walking 5, while only giving up 4 hits to earn the victory. Roth gave up 2 hits in the 1st, a hit in the 2nd, and 1 in the 4th. South Carolina would only allow 2 bases runners after the 4th inning. John Taylor and Matt Price combined to throw 1.2 innings of no-hit shut out ball to close out the game.

South Carolina Hitting
2B Scott Wingo was the offensive star for South Carolina going 4-4, was hit by a pitch, knocked in one, and scored one. His walk-off single with the bases loaded and nobody out in the 9th advanced South Carolina into the winners bracket. C Robert Beary started off the 9th with a double, followed by a CF Jackie Bradley Jr. single (his only hit of the night), and then a walk by lead-off hitter RF Evan Marzilli loaded the bases for Wingo’s clutch game winning RBI.

Texas A&M Hitting
LF Brandon Wood led the way for the Aggies at the plate. He had a bases clearing triple with two outs in the first inning. Lead off hitter RF Tyler Naquin got the first inning going for the Aggies reaching base off an error by South Carolina’s 1B Christian Walker.

Texas A&M Pitching
Aggies’ starting pitcher Ross Stripling threw 114 pitches in 8 innings of work, striking out 6, walking 1, giving up 2 ER and 7 hits.

California vs. Virginia

A pitchers duel broke out between top seeded Virginia and the scrappy California Bears. The Cavaliers were able to slow Cal’s bats and earn a 4-1 victory to advance into the winners bracket of the CWS.

University of Virginia Pitching
Danny Hultzen threw 6.1 innings of 3 hit shut out ball with no run support. Hultzen struck out 6 and walked 3. Tyler Wilson was then brought in to provide 2.1 innings of relief, giving up 3 hits, and 1 ER for the win. Brandon Kline threw .1 innings getting CF Darrel Matthew to foul out to 3B Steven Proscia for the last out and the save.

University of Virginia Hitting
The Cavaliers threatened in the third but were held scoreless until their 2-run 7th inning and 2-run 8th inning. 2B Keith Werman, the Cavaliers’ 9 hole hitter (batting .216), had the game of his life going 2-4 with a RBI and scoring the Cavs first run of the CWS. Lead off hitter SS Chris Taylor would score the winning run for the Cavs in the 7th inning. LF John Barr went 2-2 with a walk.

University of California-Berkley Hitting
The Cal Bears tried for late innings heroics scoring their only run in the top of the 9th on a single to left center by RF Chad Bunting scoring SS and cleanup hitter Marcus Semien. The Bears did not advance a runner past 2nd until the 9th inning. Cal put a runner on second base in the 1st, 2nd, and 7th innings but were never able to capitalize on Cavs pitching.

University of California-Berkley Pitching
Erik Johnson labored through 3 innings for Cal giving up 5 walks and 2 hits but no earned runs. Logan Scott threw 3 innings giving up 2 ER for the loss. Kevin Miller threw 1 inning giving up 2 ER on 3 hits.

What was she thinking?

American tennis player, Bethanie Mattek-Sands appeared at a Wimbledon pre-party in a designer dress made by Alex Noble. Noble is a designer for Lady Gaga. Once you see the outfit I think you'll see the similar "thread".

I get the need to express one's self... but at least make a cool fashion statement or wear something hot. This is just... ridiculously bad.

Mattek-Sands is seeded at Wimbledon and dressed like Lady Gaga

Football Quick News

Brandon Wimberly, a starting wide receiver for the University of Nevada football team, was shot in the abdomen and seriously wounded early Saturday morning. A group of Wolf Pack football players were arguing with another group of men when Wimberly was shot. Wimberly’s injuries are not life threatening.

Who is teaching my kid?

NFL DE Raheem Brock was arrested in Philadelphia for walking out on a $27 tab at Copacabana Club in South Street. When confronted about the bill, Brock entered into a minor scuffle before being arrested by police. Brock was charged with resisting arrest and theft.

Brock, a former University of Temple football player, was in town for a football camp teaching rising juniors and seniors. Brock was previously arrested in the Seattle area in November of 2010 on a DUI arrest. He was traveling 85 mph in a 60 mph zone. Brock’s blood alcohol content at the time of his arrest was .133. An “anonymous HogManInLA camper source” was quoted saying…“Shocker.”
